Checkmate - Malorie Blackman

Checkmate - Malorie Blackman

Checkmate - Malorie BlackmanCheckmate is about a girl who has a Cross mother, and a Nought father, in a society run by the Crosses. This book is intended for teenagers, and is a story of a mother’s love for her daughter, and how lies can split up a family.

The book is about Callie Rose’s childhood. She never knew anything about her parentage, and that her dad was a terrorist. When she finds out, aged 12-13, she slowly but surely begins to hate her mother, who kept it a secret. Then Callie starts to meet up with Jude, the head of a terrorist group. He doesn’t care about her and only wants to get back at Sephy. A few days before Callie turns sixteen, Jude tells her to make a bomb and blow up her grandfather, the deputy Prime Minister, Kamal Hadley. She has to make a bomb herself, and blow up herself and her grandfather on the day of her sixteenth birthday.

It is set in a normal world and is meant to be just a normal setting, except the Crosses run the country and want the Nought immigrants out. The key themes for this book are love and hate, how violence is never the answer, and that no matter what your parentage may be, you are your own person.

The characters in this book are all very strong, and they stand for what they believe in. The characters and their aims really help to drive the story!

I really enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it for teenage girls, like myself.
