Changeling - Steve Feasey

Trey is a 15 year old werewolf; he is friends with Alexa, who is a half-vampire. Trey also knows her father, a full vampire called Lucian, who is 220 years old and who helps him come to terms with being the last hereditary werewolf. Lucian was best friends with Trey’s dad and feels responsible for him. Lucian’s brother, Cal, is the opposite of his brother and wants to rule the world.

The story is set in London, in our world and time, a place where supernatural creatures are kept secret from normal people. This is a very normal London, with places you could visit if you wanted to – its normality contrasts greatly with Lucian’s rich apartment block.

With supernatural creatures, magic - Alexa’s mum was a Sorceress - and the relationship between Alexa & Trey, this is a complex horror story with fantasy and romance elements. However, revenge is the main theme; Trey badly wants to avenge the death of his parents. Trey’s anger can cause him problems and he can become a danger, even to those he cares about. He is still adjusting to being a supernaturally strong werewolf, so it’s not easy for him to keep his emotions under control. Other themes include magic, romance and guilt – where Lucian feels responsibility for the actions of his brother.

There’s no need to be a horror or vampire fan to like this book.  It’s just about a boy trying to cope with changes in his life and some of the things he has to deal with are a bit different from ours! We can relate even though he can change into a seven foot monster! The characters are great; you can really believe who they are - for example Trey having to learn to control his temper.

The story ends on a cliff-hanger, I found this annoying as I wanted a resolution and I’m going to have get ‘Dark Moon’ to find out what happens next.

Teenagers of all types up to the age of 16 will like this - I give this book 4 out of 5!
