Scottish Book Trust ran a funded Reading Buddies programme in five local authorities across Scotland to celebrate The Bookbug Picture Book Prize 2018. The programme reached over 5,000 pupils in 83 primary schools!
Find out about how the programme nurtured a love of reading, developed literacy skills and allowed participants to become confident speakers at Dalmilling Primary School, South Ayrshire.
What is Reading Buddies?
Scottish Book Trust's Reading Buddies Programme involves older pupils sharing a love of reading with younger pupils in the same school. They do this by reading the three shortlisted picture books in The Bookbug Picture Book Prize with their younger reading buddies.
Schools received a class set of books as well as resources and guidance during a training session delivered by Scottish Book Trust staff to kick start their project. The resources included ideas for drama and craft activities to carry out in the classroom. Older pupils took also part in a drama workshop to build their storytelling skills.
Each school ran paired reading sessions with their pupils in the run up to Book Week Scotland. At the end of their projects, schools were encouraged to vote for their favourite of the shortlisted books as part of the Bookbug Picture Book Prize.
Our Reading Buddies Programme inspired a love of reading in younger pupils, increased confidence and a sense of responsibility in older readers, and built meaningful relationships between children at different stages within schools.
