This is a collection of poems and drawings, the result of a collaborative effort by David Betteridge (author), Bob Starrett (artist), and Mike Quille (editor). It deals with Labour history and Socialist struggle, starting with real people and real places, most of them in the West of Scotland, then broadening its theme to look elsewhere, and everywhere.
As Mike Quille writes in his Introduction to the book, Slave Songs and Symphonies is ‘not only about class and cultural struggle, it is class and cultural struggle. It not only tells the story of how slave songs become symphonies - it helps make it happen.’ Published by Culture Matters / Manifesto Press
