Choke Chain is set in poor white South African neighborhood during the 1980’s It is the story of two boys trying to grow up while their family unravels. Bruce, the father, is a bigot who assumes people fall into two categories: winners or losers. And Bruce teaches his sons to do whatever it takes to be the winner. Told from the perspective of twelve year old Alex, the novel’s central question is: will Alex's character be distorted by his father's corrupted outlook?
