Well haul on the bowline,

So early in the morning,

Haul on the bowlin’, the bowlin’ haul.

Well haul on the bowline,

The skipper is a-growling,

Haul on the bowlin’, the bowlin’ haul.

Well haul on the bowline,

The package is a-rolling

Haul on the bowlin’, the bowlin’ haul.

Well haul on the bowline,

To London we are going,

Haul on the bowlin’, the bowlin’ haul.

Well haul on the bowline,

The good ship is a’bowling,

Haul on the bowlin’, the bowlin’ haul.

Hold your baby close and sing the song to them. Gently pat your hand on baby’s back, or stroke baby gently whilst singing.

Introduce simple actions, e.g. bounce up and down (‘haul on the bowline’); grumpy face (‘skipper is a growling’); rock from side to side (‘package is a rolling’); pointing to a far-off land (‘to London we are going’).

In a group, children could stand in a line to sing the song, as if they were sailors on a ship working together to haul in the rope.
