Help Pupils with Additional Support Needs Take Part in the Bookbug Picture Book Prize

CALL Scotland has once again produced accessible digital copies to help pupils with a Print Disability take part in both the Bookbug Picture Book Prize and the Scottish Teenage Book Prize.

The three books shortlisted for the Bookbug Picture Book Prize will be gifted to every P1 child in Scotland as part of the P1 Family Bag during Book Week Scotland (Monday 27 November to Sunday 3 December 2017).

The three Bookbug Picture Book Prize books are available in:

  • reader-enabled PDF
  • PowerPoint recorded narration and switch prompt versions
  • Keynote files for the iPad.

The three Scottish Teenage Book Prize books are available as reader-enabled PDFs.

You can request the digital copies directly from CALL Scotland.

Symbolised Resources

Young pupils reading together with a teacher
For the fourth year now, CALL has also produced symbolised resources to accompany the Bookbug Picture Book Prize books.

These consist of

These are all in PDF format for easy printing. There are also vocabulary sheets to accompany each symbol board. These resources will help children with communication difficulties, children with Additional Support Needs (ASN) and those with English as an Additional Language (EAL) to talk about each book, participate fully in shared reading and discuss which book they think should be the winner and why!

Download the fantastic FREE iPad communication app SoundingBoard and start using the symbol app board versions too, which can be downloaded, pre-recorded and ready to use, straight onto your iPad.

In addition there are adapted Teaching Activities with accompanying symbol boards and vocabulary sheets to go with Scottish Book Trust’s learning resource for the Bookbug Picture Book Prize 2018 - you'll find these activities in the Additional Support Needs section of the resources.

We hope that CALL Scotland’s resources will enable all children in Scotland to take part fully in this fantastic initiative from Scottish Book Trust. Happy reading!
