During a whirlwind tour of the UK after the release of her most recent book, Lady Midnight, we managed to grab a few moments with the exceptionally talented Cassandra Clare, author of The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices series, and she gave us a rapid-fire Author Confession.

What’s the most over-rated book of all time?
Moby Dick

What’s the strangest question you’ve been asked about your work?
Am I aware that demons and vampires are really real?!

Which piece of your writing are you most proud of?
Lady Midnight. It’s the most recent one and you always hope your most recent work is your best. 

What’s your favourite book shop?
Books of Wonder in NYC

Is writing a pain or a pleasure?
A little of both.

What’s your most extreme research story?
I almost got arrested trying to get in to the abandoned Renwick Small Pox Hospital in NYC when I was researching City of Bones.

Are there any films that are better than the book in your opinion?

What would your dream job be if you weren’t an author?
Travel journalist

What’s your most prized possession?
A collection of original issues of The Strand containing the original Sherlock Holmes stories.
