Bookbug Book of the Month: The Snowman
The Snowman by Raymond Briggs
One winter's night, a snowman comes to life and an unforgettable adventure begins. Raymond Briggs' favourite classic is a true piece of Christmas magic - narrated entirely through pictures, it captures the wonder and innocence of childhood.
'From the moment I read The Snowman as a child, I was entranced. It was like a whole new world had openend up for me; a world in which your greatest hopes could be realised and your greatest creations could be brought to life. Growing up with two siblings, the idea of playing in the snow on my own seemed so sad. But the more I read, and re-read this enchanting story, the more I realised that this is what makes the bond between the little boy and his snowman so special.
We are delighted that The Snowman is included in the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) Silent Books collection - a wonderful selection of wordless picture books that cross all boundaries of language and culture, age and race.
Many people are daunted at the thought of wordless picture books, but we so often forget that The Snowman has no words. The visual narrative is so strong, and the characters so engaging, that we don't need text to understand what's happening, or how the characters are feeling. If you're new to wordless books, this is a great one to start with as it's so well known. And of course, the illustrations are magical - I've spent many years wishing for a white Christmas that looks something like a snowy scene from this delightful story'.
