May 16 - June 16 is National Smile Month - the UK’s largest and longest-running campaign to promote good oral health.

We know that getting your little ones to brush their teeth regularly can be a battle. And for many, a trip to the dentist is a stressful day for everyone. But don't worry, there are plenty of picture books out there which can help you prepare your child for the dentist, or make teeth brushing a fun, and regular part of their daily routine.

Here are some of the best:

The Boy Who Hated Toothbrushes by Zehra Hicks

Boy who hated toothbrushes
Billy hates toothbrushes - there are too many other exciting things to do than brushing teeth! But when his wobbly tooth falls out and the tooth fairy leaves him a new 'tooth sparkler', Billy has a big change of heart. You can have great fun talking about the different toothbrushes that Billy has tried ('knobbly', 'spotty', 'spaceman') and maybe try to think about the perfect toothbrush for your little one. What would it look like, what colour would it be?

Smile, Crocodile, Smile by An Vrombaut

Meet Clarabella Crocodile, she has so many teeth that brushing them can take all day! Poor Clarabella spends so long tooth-brushing that she even misses out on playing with her friends - until they all have an idea to help her! There's a very subtle message about the importance of oral hygiene in this story, and little ones will love the cast of characters that come to Clarabella's help.

Peppa Pig: Dentist Trip by Ladybird

Peppa pig at the dentist
Peppa, George and Mr Dinosaur are going to the dentist. It's George's first visit and he's a teeny bit nervous. This is the perfect book to read to children who are heading to the dentist for the first time. It's a lovely, gentle story, showing Peppa and her brother having lots of fun on their outing. Covering everything from the dentist's waiting room, to the water jet used on your teeth, this will prepare little ones fully for their first dentist trip.

How To Brush Your Teeth with Snappy Croc by Jane Clarke and Georgie Birkett

Croc brushing teeth

'Little Croc's been crunching, snip, snap, SNIP! She doesn't want to clean her teeth. Watch out! She can nip.' This is a great board book to introduce very young children to tooth-brushing. With bright, bold illustrations, and fun galore with toothpaste, this playful little book is perfect for introducing tooth-brushing into the daily routine.

There are so many books to help you encourage your children to have good dental hygiene - it's just about finding the books that work for you.

As your little one's teeth start to fall out, look out for the brilliant Lollipop and Grandpa and The Wobbly Tooth by Penelope Hareper and Cate James and My Wobbly Tooth Must Not Ever Never Fall Out by Lauren Child.

Keep smiling!
