About the P1 book

During their first year at primary school, all children in Scotland receive a free book with a message from Bookbug. Please check back soon for more information about the book that will be gifted to all P1 children in 2012. 

Last year’s chosen book, What the Ladybird Heard by Julia Donaldson, won in the 0-7 age category of the 2011 Royal Mail Awards for Scottish Children’s Books.  Thousands of children voted in this age group, so we were pleased to gift a book that really was their choice. 

How is the book gifted?

The P1 book was gifted to all P1 children at school during November 2011.  Books were delivered to one central point within each local authority for onward delivery to schools.

Flagship event with Julia Donaldson

To celebrate the gifting of What the Ladybird Heard, we held a flagship event with Julia Donaldson for P1 pupils in Angus. Julia Donaldson is the UK’s best-loved children’s picture book author and the current Children’s Laureate.

Free CPD sessions, Glow meet and other training opportunities

We delivered free CPD sessions to accompany the P1 bookgifting project.   However we have a short training video that gives a few quick tips about using the P1 books.

Teacher resources

Teacher resources were available to help teachers build What the Ladybird Heard into their lesson plans! These brilliant resources are still available for you to use if you wish. Click here for videos and activities to use in conjunction with the free books.
