Event info:

On Thursday 12th May 2011 at 11am James Mayhew talked about his passion for art, his beautiful illustrations and his stories. James also painted live in the studio!

Author biography:

James created his first Katie book Katie's Picture Show over twenty years ago as a way to share his enthusiasm for art with children. His series of Katie books are much-loved and respected as an early introduction to art. Ella Bella Ballerina and the Sleeping Beauty was James's first title featuring the adorable Ella Bella, and has been illustrated using a new delightfully retro art style. He had an exhibition in the National Gallery of Scotland in 2009. James lives in Hertfordshire with his wife and son.

"Excellent event - James Mayhew is an excellent choice so easy to listen to and so interesting." Margaret, Rosemount Primary

"Excellent the children really enjoyed it. We are a school for children with social, emotional and behavioural needs. It can be diificult to hold their attention for lengthy periods. They all said that liked the idea that the author drew when talking to them." Derek, Greenview Learning Centre

"The best one we've seen!" Louisa, Craiglowan Preparatory School

"The children engaged well with the author to the point that some seemed to think they were in the audience and joined in debates etc." Chris, Braehead Primary School

"A great experience for the childen, first time we have viewed such an event. Actually seeing illustrator at work so much better than explaining to the childern." Alison, Fraserburgh South Park Primary School

"Excellent event , my class were really impressed by how the author could draw and chat." M. Mclean, Braehead Primary School

"He was working upside-down which fascinated them and they all want to have a go. I took extensive notes, prepared a report from these and pupils extracted relevant information to complete a Factfile on the author. There was a space for a picture and I thought I might have to go back into Glow as we did this on Monday 16th, but pupils surprised me with their drawings of James. He must have made an impression." Elouise, Mouswald Primary School

"The children were really enthralled and super-impressed by the upside-down drawing skills on show! We followed it up by doing some illustrations for some writing we had done earlier in the day and had some great results as the children really focussed on what they had seen to try and produce their best work." Jonathan, Lasswade Primary School

"As with all events I have watched so far with class, they are entertaing, interesting, valuable, keep them coming!" Lorraine, Strichen Primary School
