Reading with Your Child
Advice about reading for parents and carers
You can order a copy of Beginning with Books, a guide to reading with your child created by Scottish Book Trust. Order a copy here.
Scottish Government's home reading initiative, Read Together!, was launched to encourage parents and carers to share books with their children from an early age. The website at the heart of the campaign www.readtogether.co.uk offers a range of information and guidance on reading with children, a selection of practical Bright Ideas for ways in which to incorporate the enjoyment of books into family life, and an age-ranged choice of recommended reading.
The interactive Read Together! CD Rom, now available in every library in Scotland, offers more Bright Ideas and recommended books, together with a word game in which young readers risk being dunked in (virtual) green gunk! All the Read Together! resources have been developed in order to support the work of teachers and librarians in involving parents and carers in their child's literary development. The National Co-ordinators of the Read Together! initiative are Kathryn Ross and Lindsey Fraser and they can be contacted on info@readtogether.co.uk
You can also follow author/illustrator Moira Munro's recommendation. She suggests getting hold of a copy of a book called The reading bug and how to help your child to catch it. Written in a humorous style, the book explains how readers can open the world through a love of books. The author has cut through the jargon and the controversies to reveal the simple truths which should enable every parent to infect their child with the reading bug.
