A Proud Moment In My Life by Helen Beurskens

My daughter's wedding wasn't just any wedding as they had two receptions, one at Mexico and one at home. The wedding in Mexico was out of this world, the ceremony and the weather were fabulous.

The day started with a swim in the pool and a bit sunbathing, a walk along the beach and on our way back from the beach it was time to get some breakfast. Once we'd finished I went to see if the preparations had started in the garden. The flowers in the garden had a fragrance of their own and were beautiful to look at. In comes two male staff with two heart-shaped frames which looked tacky. Oh, I said. The staff were coming in with tables, they saw my face and one came up to me, gave me a big hug and said, 'In twenty minutes you will see a difference, don't worry.'

I left the garden and prayed to God, 'Be nice to us, thank you.' It was time to get my clothes ready and see if Liz needed a hand. We left her dress spread out on the bed to take the creases out but there was a bit that did not sit right so we would press it on the bed. I put the iron on low, I just touched it and it stuck. I said, 'You do it,' for I was scared it would stick to it. 'No, you do it.' We looked at each other. 'Go on, mum.' I did it gently, got a sheet and put that on it. It did the trick. We hung the dress up on the veranda and when the hairdresser came I went to get my shower and see if Kirk and Dad were getting ready. I had a quick look at the garden on my way to the room, it was looking lovely. The balloons were blue and white, they went with the beautiful clear blue sky.

When it was time to get Elizabeth...Oh, my God! Not finished yet! Only thirty minutes to go and her hair was like she had put her fingers in the socket. I didn't know what to say. The hairdresser couldn't speak English. We just looked at the clock and at her. She smiled. I got everything ready, it was just a matter of putting the dress and veil on quickly. Within ten minutes her hair started to look very nice but there was not much time left.

I was a proud mother seeing my daughter looking so very beautiful on her special day. The dress was white with beaded bodice     and a long train, the veil was embroidered with satin thread and Liz wore a tiara and one of my necklaces. This seemed to be of interest to a lot of people as it was commented on. My outfit was simple. It's not much fun if you can't get something to go with the weather so I got something light and bright and a hat, too. Kirk looked the part, he wore the kilt and Dad, too. It was special for us as we were the only family there. I was between a bridesmaid and mother of the bride. The day for us was sunshine and smiles. 'Dad is coming, Liz.' We looked at each other and a lump came into my throat. I'd better not cry or my make-up will run. All the maids clapped as we made our way out, the photographer was taking photos and as we got near the garden someone ran and put the music on. Then it hit me. 'My wean's getting married!' Dad was so proud, too.

The crowds of people were all round the garden, Kirk standing there, Dad and Liz walking and I was at the back ready to lift the train as it was very long, then I had to go to be beside Dad. The ceremony was very special, the music, champagne, cake, the crowds all around us. It was awesome, the whole atmosphere was brilliant.

Then down to the beach for photos. They were man and wife now, a beautiful couple and I'm happy to say I was there to see them tie the knot. You may think I am biased but there were people from all over the world and they were taking photos and videos too. Everybody was so kind I felt a bit special and overwhelmed. I went in to get a brandy before we all went for dinner where the flowers from the wedding were on our tables. We had a happy evening, the end of a most beautiful and romantic day.
